Does our training work?
Organisations spend large sums on training, yet many cannot say what it achieved. Evaluating training answers a simple question: did people learn, did they change how they work, and was it worth it?
In this course you will follow Rasha, training manager at Nahrain Power Services, a maintenance contractor in Basra with 300 technicians working at power stations. The general manager has asked her a hard question: "We spent over 600 million dinars on training last year. What did we get for it?" Rasha could show attendance lists and satisfaction forms, but not results.
Training as a system

Evaluation is not a form handed out on the last day. It starts at the needs analysis, where you decide what success will look like, and it feeds back into improving the next programme.

Modern training methods

Rasha's department relied almost entirely on five-day classroom courses. Technicians learned the theory but had few chances to practise on real equipment. The programme you will follow in this course combined classroom sessions, workshop practice and on-the-job coaching.

Why evaluate?

Evaluation and improvement: two related ideas
Arabic training literature often separates taqyeem (measuring and judging value) from taqweem (correcting and improving based on that judgement). Both matter: measuring without acting changes nothing, and acting without measuring is guesswork.

Before, during and after

The step most often skipped is the first. Without a measure taken before training, there is nothing to compare the results with afterwards.

Exercise: your training today
- Choose a training programme your organisation ran recently.
- What evidence exists of its results? List everything: forms, tests, reports, numbers.
- Which methods were used? Which modern methods could have worked better?
- Was anything measured before the training started?
When should evaluation of a training programme be planned?
Success measures and baselines are set before training.
