Replace argument with structured thinking: explore any issue together from six angles (facts, feelings, benefits, risks, new ideas and process) to run shorter meetings, hear every voice and reach better, well-understood decisions.
Capable teams often hold poor meetings: people defend positions, attack other views and leave without a decision, while the best ideas go unsaid. Parallel thinking offers a simple alternative. Instead of splitting into sides, everyone looks at the subject from the same angle at the same time. This self-study course teaches the principle, popularised by Edward de Bono, through a practical framework of six perspectives that you can use in meetings, alone or in disagreements.
Across six lessons you will follow a realistic case study: a bottled water company in Basra whose management has argued for months about replacing single-use plastic office bottles with returnable glass ones, and the planning manager who uses parallel thinking to break the deadlock. You will see how an untested "80% return rate" is exposed in the facts round, how a sceptic finds an unexpected benefit, how serious risks become creative questions, how a weak idea develops into refill stations, and how the team reaches a clear pilot decision in a single session. You will learn why adversarial meetings fail, how parallel thinking differs, the six perspectives and why to separate them, rules for facts and for feelings, stating benefits and risks with reasons, why order matters, protecting and developing new ideas, alternatives, reversal and combination, sequences for different purposes, defining the question, timing a session, the facilitator's role, closing with decisions and actions, using single perspectives, thinking alone, handling disagreements and common mistakes. Each lesson includes diagrams, worked examples, an exercise on an issue of your own and short questions that check your understanding, and the course ends with a 20-question final exam.
