Why speaking skills matter
Good ideas do not speak for themselves. Whether you present a proposal to management, train a team, brief a client or speak at a conference, your ideas succeed only if people understand them, remember them and act on them.
Public speaking is one of the most valued skills at work, and one of the most feared. The good news is that it is a skill, not a talent. Almost every confident speaker you admire was once nervous, and became good through preparation and practice.
This course follows the journey of a speech from the first thought to the last question:
| Lesson | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Audience and purpose |
| 2 | Organising and simplifying your content |
| 3 | Powerful openings and closings |
| 4 | Confidence and voice |
| 5 | Body language, eye contact and visual aids |
| 6 | Engaging the audience, questions and authenticity |
Meet Noor
In this course you will follow Noor, 27, a network planning engineer at Ur Telecom, a mobile operator based in Nasiriyah. Noor has designed a plan to build 46 new sites that would bring a reliable signal to rural Dhi Qar.
She now has two speaking challenges:
| Event | Audience | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Board presentation in three weeks | CEO Dr Sabah, the finance director and four board members | 20 minutes plus questions |
| Regional ICT conference in Baghdad, two months later | About 300 engineers, officials and journalists | 15 minutes plus questions |
Noor knows her subject perfectly. But at her last team meeting she read from her slides, spoke very fast, and forgot her main point when a manager interrupted. "I know the technical part," she told Mr Ali, the head of corporate communications, who agreed to mentor her. "I just don't know how to present it."
Ur Telecom and all people and figures in this course are fictional examples.
Nervous? You are not alone

Speaking anxiety is natural. Your body prepares for something important by releasing adrenaline: faster heartbeat, dry mouth, shaky hands. The same energy, managed well, makes you more alert and lively. Lesson 4 gives you practical techniques to control it.

Know your audience
Every good talk starts with the audience, not with your slides. The same content must be presented very differently to engineers, managers or the public.

Noor answered five questions about each audience:
| Question | The board | The conference |
|---|---|---|
| Who are they? | Senior managers, mostly non-engineers | Mixed: engineers, officials, media |
| What do they know? | Business well, radio technology little | Varies widely |
| What do they care about? | Cost, return, risk, reputation | New ideas, lessons, impact on people |
| What is their attitude? | Cautious: budgets are tight | Curious, but many talks compete for attention |
| What do I want from them? | Approval of phase 1 | Interest, partnerships, a good reputation for Ur Telecom |

Purpose and key message

Once you know your purpose, write your key message: the one sentence you want the audience to remember if they forget everything else. If you cannot say it in one sentence, you are not ready to prepare the talk.
| Talk | Purpose | Noor's key message |
|---|---|---|
| Board | Persuade | "Phase 1, 18 sites for 2.6 million dollars, pays for itself in under four years and brings 120,000 new customers." |
| Conference | Inform and inspire | "Rural coverage can be profitable when sites are planned around where people actually live and move." |

Exercise: plan your next talk
- Choose a talk or presentation you will give soon (or one you gave recently).
- Answer the five audience questions: who, what they know, what they care about, their attitude, what you want from them.
- Place your audience on the knowledge and interest matrix.
- Decide your main purpose: inform, persuade or inspire.
- Write your key message in one sentence of no more than 25 words.
- Test it: say it aloud to a colleague. Can they repeat it back?
Where should the preparation of a good talk begin?
Audience and purpose decide what to include, how deep to go and how to present it.
What is a "key message"?
If the audience forgets everything else, the key message is what should stay with them.
