Self-development and key 1: self-awareness

Why self-development?

Self-development is the deliberate effort to grow your knowledge, skills and character, so that you can do more of what matters to you and contribute more to others.

Jobs, technology and expectations change quickly. The skills that got you your first job will not carry you through a whole career. People who keep developing themselves stay useful, confident and open to opportunities; people who stop often feel stuck.

This course is built around seven keys. Each one is simple; the power comes from using them together, consistently, over months.

Cycle of the seven keys to self-development

Meet Hamza

In this course you will follow Hamza, 26, an IT support technician at Najaf Care Hospital, a private hospital with 220 beds. For three years he has fixed printers, reset passwords and repaired computers. He is reliable and well liked, but he feels stuck.

"I want to become a network engineer," he told his manager, Eng. Muntadhar. "But I don't know where to start, I never have time, and every online course I begin, I drop after two weeks."

Eng. Muntadhar agreed to meet him once a month for a year, on one condition: "You do the work. I'll only ask questions."

Key 1: Self-awareness

Self-awareness means understanding yourself honestly: your strengths, weaknesses, values, emotions and the effect you have on others. It is the first key because you cannot develop what you cannot see.

Four windows of self-knowledge: open, blind spot, hidden, unknown

Growth happens when the open window gets bigger: by asking others what they see (reducing blind spots) and by sharing more of your goals and ideas (reducing the hidden area).

Seeing yourself as others see you

Eng. Muntadhar asked Hamza to rate himself on six skills, then asked five colleagues and users to rate him too.

Scatter chart of Hamza's self-ratings against colleagues' ratings

Two surprises. Colleagues rated his networking and calm under pressure much higher than he did: hidden strengths. But they rated his explaining to users much lower. Several nurses said he fixed problems quickly but interrupted them and used technical words they didn't understand. Hamza had no idea.

Making feedback a habit

Five steps for asking for feedback

Hamza started asking two users each week: "Was the explanation clear?" He learned to let them finish, repeat the problem in their words and explain the fix in one simple sentence. Within three months, user satisfaction with IT support rose noticeably, and nurses began asking for him by name.

Other ways to build self-awareness
  • Keep a short weekly journal: what went well, what didn't, what I learned.
  • Notice what gives you energy and what drains it.
  • Review a task after finishing it: what would I do differently?
  • Use reputable personality or strengths questionnaires as starting points for reflection, not labels.

Exercise: your self-awareness check

  1. List six skills that matter in your work and rate yourself from 1 to 5 on each.
  2. Ask three to five people to rate you on the same skills.
  3. Mark your hidden strengths (others rate you higher) and blind spots (others rate you lower).
  4. Ask two people: "What should I keep doing?" and "What one thing should I improve?"
  5. Choose one blind spot to work on this month.

In the four windows of self-knowledge, what is a "blind spot"?

  • Something you know but hide from others
  • Something others see in you but you don't
  • Something nobody knows yet
  • Something everyone knows

Blind spots are visible to others but not to you; feedback reveals them.

Colleagues rate one of your skills much higher than you do. This is…

  • A hidden strength
  • A blind spot
  • Proof the colleagues are wrong

When others rate you higher than you rate yourself, it is a strength you may be underusing.
